OWING MILLS, MD. – If you have a team of middle school wrestlers and you want to know how your team compares with other teams in the country, the place to attend is the McDonogh Duals. The McDonogh Duals have always been known for the place where some of the top middle schools’ wrestlers throughout the country go and compete.
This past weekend, Team BVRTC, a squad loaded with California talent, was triumphant in defeating defending champions Scorpions Dynasty Gold 33-31.
BVRTC posted a perfect 8-0 record during the event. Prior to wrestling in the gold bracket, Team BVRTC won Pool C by finishing with a 3-0 record and outscoring the competition 217-19. In the gold bracket, Team BVRTC went on to defeat teams from New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Maryland.
Against Team Scorpions Dynasty Gold, Abron Cline (63) got BVRTC first on the scoreboard as he defeated Aydan Thomas, 2-1. Nevertheless, Team Scorpions Dynasty Gold responded by winning three consecutive bouts to go up 12-3.
Brandt Harer (85) made the score closer as he won his bout 4-1 to make the score 12-6 after five contested matches. However, once again, Team Scorpion Dynasty Gold won two additional matches at 89 and 93-pounds to take the biggest led at 18-6.
However, Team BVRTC rebounded back by claiming the next four bouts as Beau Mantanona (97), Cade Wirnsberger (101), Maximus Martinez (106), and Conner Harer (111) won their respective matches to help Team BVRTC take the led for the second time in the dual meet. After 11 contested matches, Team BVRTC was up 27-18.
Brock Zurawski (116) and Vincent Robinson (121) won close matches to help Team Scorpion Dynasty Gold get closer in the team score 27-24 with four matches left on the dual. Nevertheless, eighth-grader Nicco Ruiz blanket Isaiah Fenton 6-0 at 131 to give BVRTC a six-point lead.
The dual went back-and-forth as both teams won a match to make the score 33-27 with a match left. The pressure was put on Jimmy Mullen (211) who need a fall to tie the match and help Scorpions Dynasty Gold win on criteria based on more matches won. However, Daniel Herrara fought off his back and didn’t allow Mullen to pin him. In the end, Muller won via a significant decision, but it was too little as they lost 33-31.
