Bonus Points Helps Servite Defeat St. John Bosco for CIF-SS Duals; 3rd Overall for the Friars

ANAHEIM, CA. – After a couple of uncertainties on the year due to wrestlers overlapping in the same weight category, the Friars of Servite High were triumphant over the weekend, in once again, defeating Trinity League rivals St. John Bosco (37-32) to claim the 2019 CIF-SS Division I duals and the third overall dual-meet championship for Coach Alan Clinton and staff.

"It came down to the wire, and it came down to them or us," said Coach Alan Clinton. “We won seven matches and so did they. However, bonus points in five of the seven matches helped us win the dual."

The dual meet started at 138 where Teddy Okada put No. 26 Oscar Aranda on his back to earn the fall and put the Friars up on the scoreboard 6-0. However, The Friars were quiet through the second and third matches as No. 2 Cael Valencia pinned Daniel Magana at 145, and Tyler Okada was defeated by No. 4 Sonny Santiago 5-1.

D. Magana gave Valencia a tough match as the score was tie 3-3 in the third period before Valencia got the cradle and flattened Magana for the fall.

Valor Buck tied the dual-meet at nine apart as he earned a hard-fought 12-5 decision over No. 34 Mikey Beltran after bumping up a weight class. The dual-meet when back in favor of Bosco as Louis Rojas earned the 8-1 decision over Neil Carter at 170. The joy for the Servite faithful didn’t last match as No. 2 Nathan Haas pinned Victor Villasenor late in the third period.

The Friars then grabbed the largest lead of the afternoon when No. 11 Tristan Wilson received a forfeit, and Ayden Matheney made quick work of his opponent at 285 to help the Friars take a 27-18 led after nine matches.

Nevertheless, Bosco got closer to the led as they received six points out of a forfeit at 106 to cut the led to 27-24. However, state qualifier Andrew Silva got the Friars to go up by nine points as he pinned Charles Burnett in 58 seconds to put the Friars a step closer to a CIF Dual-Meet championship.

The next two matches went in favor of Bosco as Antonio Lorenzo (120), and Isaac Salas (126) earned major decisions to put all the pressure on the 132 bout with the score 33-32 in favor of Servite.
