Chattanooga, Tennessee. – California natives Jaden Abas of Stanford University and Devan Turner of Oregon State were the lone wrestlers from the golden state to advanced to the semifinal round of the Southern Scuffle tournament.
Seeded No. 6 at 133lbs, Turner kick-off the tournament by defeating his first two-opponents Charlie Klepps of Iowa State (3-1) and Jaret Lane of Lehigh (6-4) to advance to the quarterfinal round where he got the upset over No. 3 Mosha Schwartz of Northern Colorado (4-3). Turner will start action versus 3x NCAA qualifier Cameron Sykora of North Dakota State.
Abas, who is wrestling unattached for Stanford at 149lbs, was 4-0 on the day to punch his ticket into the semifinals at 149 pounds. He opened the tournament with an 8-1 decision over Cleveland State's Sam Matzek. In the Round of 32, Abas shut out Chattanooga's Jacob Mariakis, 11-0. In the Round of 16, he outlasted Duke's Josh Finesilver, 5-3, to reach the quarterfinals. There, he posted a 10-3 decision over Campbell's Jason Kraisser. Abas opponent will be 2019 NCAA qualifier Colston DiBlasi of George Mason in the semis.
Anthony Montalvo of Oklahoma State (184) collected a major before dropping his second-round bout to Navy's David Key. He bounced back with a win via decision and a fall over T.J. Pottinger of North Dakota State to finish the day 2-2. Today's opponent will be Julien Broderson of Iowa State.
Lorenzo De La Riva of North Dakota State (174) started things off by pinning his first opponent and eventually knocking-off two-time All-American Joe Smith of Oklahoma State (7-2) to advance to the quarterfinal round. De La Riva dropped his next bout to Gregg Harvey of Pittsburg (8-0) to finish the day 2-1.
Nicolas Aguilar of Rutgers (125) continued his hot streak of wrestling as he pinned his first opponent and then majored his second opponent (13-4) to advance to the quarterfinal round. In the quarterfinal round, Aguilar dropped a 5-4 match to Old Dominion wrestler Michael Mcgee. He will kick off things today versus Navy’s Aslan Kilic.
